The controversy over Kannada language has reached a serious stage and now director Ram Gopal Varma's response has led to another controversy. Kamal Haasan's statement that "Kannada is the language of origin from Tamil" has sparked outrage in Karnataka with demands for a ban on the film 'Thuglife'. Ram Gopal Varma, who is always active on social media, tweeted, "Whatever the truth, banning a film if you don't apologise is a new goondaism." Even though he tweeted this, he immediately deleted it.

In the process, it is clear that he stood by Kamal Haasan. But at a time when Kannadigas are reacting more emotionally to issues related to language, such statements are adding fuel to the fire. Meanwhile, Kamal Haasan has approached the High Court for the release of his upcoming film Thuglife, requesting it not to ban the film and provide adequate security. However, prominent pro-Kannada organisations in Karnataka have issued a stern warning to theatres and are opposing the screening of the film. In the wake of this controversy, Rachita Ram, Sadhu Kokila, Sa Ra Many artists including Govindu, Sumalatha Ambareesh, Vasishta Simha and others have defied Kamal Haasan's statement. In spite of all this, Kamal has gone abroad to promote the film without apologizing, adding to the anger against him.
