Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan's statement during the promotion of his new film ThugLife has created a stir among kannadigas. The protests in Karnataka started after he said that "Kannada language is derived from Tamil".
Reacting to the statement, Kamal Haasan said, "I have said it out of love. I have said it as taught by historians. Politicians should not talk about languages; This should be left to the historians."
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah condemned the statement and said, "Kamal Haasan does not know the history of Kannada language."
Despite the controversy, Kamal Haasan has refused to withdraw his statement. He said that "love never apologizes".
