Actor-turned-politician and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder Kamal Haasan has taken a new turn in his political career. On June 6, he filed his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu. The DMK (DMK) has given one of its four seats to Haasan's party, which is being seen as a politically significant step ahead of the 2026 assembly elections.

Mani Ratnam's directorial ThugLife has earned just Rs 17 crore on its first day despite huge expectations, much less than the survey. The film was never released in Karnataka amidst opposition from Kannadigas. It is against this backdrop that Kamal Haasan is taking his entry into politics more seriously.

Kamal Haasan, who entered politics in 2018, is all set to enter the Rajya Sabha – the main platform of central politics for the first time. This is the result of a recent political pact between the DMK and the MNM.

Kamal Haasan faced a lot of flak in Karnataka for his controversial statement that Kannada originated from Tamil language. His refusal to apologise for his remarks, and that he has received a warning from the High Court, is now a matter of talk in political circles.
