"Thug Life budget ₹300 crore, earnings only ₹42 crore – a huge loss for Kamal Haasan!"

Mani Ratnam's much-awaited film 'ThugLife' starring Kamal Haasan has turned out to be a disaster at the box office. Made on a budget of Rs 300 crore, the film earned only Rs 42 crore in its first week, causing severe financial losses.
Kamal Haasan's anti-Kannada remarks even before the release of the film have created a huge controversy and due to this, the film was never released in Karnataka. There has been strong opposition to this and the market for cinema in South India has declined.
The film, which earned Rs 15 crore on the first day of its release, did not cross the Rs 10 crore mark in the subsequent days. With this, the total collection of the film has not crossed Rs 50 crore. The earnings reached on Monday (day 7) were only Rs 1.25 crore.
Since the film is produced by Kamal Haasan himself, he has to bear the burden of huge losses even as a producer. What's worse, there is also the possibility that Netflix may cancel the contract for the distribution of MovieOTT.
While Mani Ratnam's directorial 'Ponniyin Selvan' series had some success in the past, he did not do as well as expected with 'Thuglife'. The film will also be a setback for Mani Ratnam's directorial debut.
